Crayfish, also called crawfish or crawdad, are closely related to the lobster. More than half of the more than 500 species occur in North America, particularly Kentucky (Mammoth Cave) and Louisiana in the Mississippi basin. Crayfish also live in Europe, New Zealand, East Asia and throughout the world, including the Tristan da Cunha Islands. Nearly all live in freshwater, although a few survive in salt water. Crayfish are characterised by a joined head and thorax, or midsection, and a segmented body, which is sandy yellow, green, or dark brown in colour.

i must agree with you - it is absolutely revolting
ReplyDeleteThe detail in your photo is amazing... you can even see it's eyes. Thanks for the informative post!
ReplyDeleteI hope he didn't suffer as a result, they can be toxic - depends on the water they live in. Last I heard they are becoming rare in Britain and I haven't heard mention of the here.
ReplyDeletebig one !!!
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely gross to watch (and listen) to someone eat one of those things!
ReplyDeleteI ate some when I lived in New Orleans...delicious with red beans and rice! They always called them crawfish. I think we have some in Florida too, where they're referred to as crayfish
ReplyDeleteWOW! That is huge! I thought they were really small...it definitely looks like a small lobster.
ReplyDeleteLilli: That's a big one, did he eat it?
ReplyDeleteThe crayfish here are so small they wouldn't even make a little snack! This looks huge - I am not sure I would want to have them crawl up my leg like our little ones do!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great picture of a Crayfish! Fascinating creature - those pincers look like they could hurt. Thoroughly enjoyed your post!

ReplyDeleteSounds like GUMBO might happen?
I hope he didn't eat it... it looks horrible.
ReplyDeleteAnd if he DID eat it... it probably gave him tummyache.
Ewwww! I don't DO shellfish but it IS a cracking shot. And catch. ;0)
ReplyDeleteMan he is huge!
ReplyDeleteI used to be so afraid of them when my Grandpa took us fishing. :)
That critter is WAY bigger than any of the crayfish I've ever found around here ;-) He's cool!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is one big crawdad! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHow do you catch a crayfish without him pinching you with his claws? I bet he tasted good.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen any longer than the palm of my hand about 4 inches roughly. Cool shot.
ReplyDeleteI like them, but I don't like to catch them :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent photo, so clear.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo...I've never seen a crayfish before. It really does resemble a lobster! We have a lot of lobster fishing here where we live.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting!
Lilli
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think the chances of live lobster were very small.
At least he has become a toy.
Well, eeewwwww ..... not what I was expecting, though clearly a critter.
ReplyDeleteThat is a neat shot! Thank you for your comments on Daisy.
