Crayfish, also called crawfish or crawdad, are closely related to the lobster. More than half of the more than 500 species occur in North America, particularly Kentucky (Mammoth Cave) and Louisiana in the Mississippi basin. Crayfish also live in Europe, New Zealand, East Asia and throughout the world, including the Tristan da Cunha Islands. Nearly all live in freshwater, although a few survive in salt water. Crayfish are characterised by a joined head and thorax, or midsection, and a segmented body, which is sandy yellow, green, or dark brown in colour.

  3. I hope he didn't suffer as a result, they can be toxic - depends on the water they live in. Last I heard they are becoming rare in Britain and I haven't heard mention of the here.

  5. I ate some when I lived in New Orleans...delicious with red beans and rice! They always called them crawfish. I think we have some in Florida too, where they're referred to as crayfish

  7. The crayfish here are so small they wouldn't even make a little snack! This looks huge - I am not sure I would want to have them crawl up my leg like our little ones do!

  19. How do you catch a crayfish without him pinching you with his claws? I bet he tasted good.

  22. Great photo...I've never seen a crayfish before. It really does resemble a lobster! We have a lot of lobster fishing here where we live.
    Thanks for visiting!

  23. Lilli

Anyway, I think the chances of live lobster were very small.

At least he has become a toy.
